Explode the Code, for use in the primary and elementary grades, teaches the basic phonics concepts necessary for beginning through intermediate reading. Each of the 12 illustrated workbooks in the program contains a series of lessons of approximately 8 pages in length. These lesssons follow a consistent format designed to reinforce phonetic paterns in a sequential manner. Within each lesson children have extensive practice in matching, reading, copying, spelling, and writing sounds and words. Amusing illustrations, drawn by children, highlight the lesson exercises. The simple directions and consistent format allow students to progress independently. Modern Curriculum Press Plaid Phonics
Plaid phonics has been teaching children about words for over 40 years. This is a classic in education. Parochial schools have used this series for decades. Ths most recent revision has enhanced the pages wiht attractive color and clear and concise rules. We love the fact that the instructions are clearly written on the student page. Books D through F are titled Word Study.

Modern Curriculum Press Spelling
This is a spelling text which uses PHONICS all of the way through! Though this is a secular text, it is not objectionable. There is a dictionary in the back of each book which helps with dictionary skills as well as vocabulary development. What a deal! The words the children look up are SURE to be there!

Modern Curriculum Press Readers
Let your student build reading sucess with colorful, decodable books. These phonetically controlled stories help students learn, practice and apply phonics-independently, to build confidence.

Picture Letters - a Christian Cottage product
These are simple, cartoon letters which illustrate the sound of the letter through its shape. A student will need to have a good understanding of the shape of a letter first. The sound will follow easily because the picture will clue them (the "a" has a leaf to make it look like an "apple", the "e" is doing "EX-ercise", the "f" is "fluffy", etc..).

Sight Words - a Christian Cottage Product
We think intensive phonics is by far the best way to learn to read, but we were at a loss to find curriculum to teach children how to go from sounding out c-a-t to reading sentences like, "The boy walked to the store." We could not find any curriculum to teach common words which don't always sound out as well as we would like but should be easily recognized. We wrote the 200+ Sight Word curriculum to fill this gap.
Lap Chalkboard and Dry Erase board for beginning readers
We recommend that you use these boards with the Sight Words program, or any other beginning reading program because the tactile sensation helps a child "lock" the letter shape into their brain.

Lap Chalkboard Set

Sing Spell Read and Write : Off We Go
Grades: Pre-K-8 $12.00
Sing, Spell, Read & Write is a phonics-based program that uses a 36-step program of carefully sequenced steps to teach reading, writing, and spelling. Delivering explicit phonics instruction via a multisensory approach, Sing, Spell, Read & Write reaches every avenue to the brain and addresses every student's learning style. For more than two decades, veteran educator Sue Dickson developed and field-tested this program in her own classroom. Where other reading programs were failing the students who were struggling the most, Mrs. Dickson saw first-hand the amazing results her students achieved when she combined music with multimodal teaching strategies. Using look, listen, point, sing-along, and echo routines along with gross motor and fine motor activities, the program activitely engages the senses and effectively reaches all types of learners. Virtually every child is assured of success. Today, the program has a proven, nationwide track record and the soundness of such an approach is strongly supported by current research on brain function, language acquisition, and reading.
Teach your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons
$22.00
This book is a DISTAR approach to reading. The story of DISTAR begins with two educational psychologists named Englemann and Becker. The schools were using the Look-Say system of reading. When the underprivileged children of the inner city were not succeeding, the schools determined it was so to their cultural disadvantage and learning disabilities. Englemann and BEcker thought otherwise and set out to prove that any child could read if taught properly. They were extremely successful and a "cookbook, no-fail" type of reading program emerged in which teachers were given a script to read with their students. This book will also give you a script to read. It also addresses many reading struggles ahead of time. (dots beneath the words teach eye fixation, left to right arrows teach eye tracking, attached letters or unusual shaped letters increase recognition and reduce confusion.)
Directions Take your time and work one lesson per day with young ones. Some children will need to switch to skipping the easy lessons and go right to the more challenging lessons. MOVE THROUGH THIS BOOK AT YOUR CHILD"S PACE. Don't hold them up or jam them through. If your child is stuggling with vowel sounds and letter recognition, try Picture Letters to help them along. When you get to lesson 70 or so, it will go very fast. You may need to slow down or stop and work on just the Sight Words cards for awhile. As soon as 3 letters are being ussed to form words, you can start teaching the Sight Words curriculum. Children who successfully complete this book often measure at the late-first-grade level in their reading skills!
